The Center for Gender and Child Studies, Muhammadiyah University Jakarta (PSGA UMJ) held a webinar entitled Islam, Women and Civilization, Thursday (21/09/2023). Presenting Dr. Nahlah Shabry El-Siedy, , the webinar was very interactive discussing the figure of female hadith narrators.
UMJ Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ma'mun Murod, M.Sc., appreciated the webinar which raised the theme of women. “Islam is a religion that liberates women. "Hopefully this seminar can produce new views about women," he said.
Ma'mun also said that other Islamic female figures such as Khodijah, Aisyah and Fatimah were a series of names that colored the development of Islam at that time. According to him, Islam is the only religion that has a firm position regarding women because the rules explained in the Koran regarding the distribution of zakat, inheritance and polygamy show the high status of women.
The participants were very enthusiastic about discussing with Dr. Nahlah Shabry El-Siedy who discusses the life history of Karimah Al-Marwaziyyah Ummul Kiram ra
Karimah Marwaziyyah is nicknamed the amirul mukminin fil hadith. The qualities of honesty, trustworthiness, and fairness were inherent in his personality from an early age. This invites the belief of the ulama to gain knowledge from the woman nicknamed Ummul Kiram (mother of noble people).
Karimah is an authoritative female narrator (sanad) from Sahih Bukhari. He obtained his Sanad to Bukhari from Abu Haitsam al-Kusymahani, Dhahir Ibnu Ahmad Assarkhasi, and Abdullah Ibnu Yusuf bin Bamuwaih as-Ashbahani.
Historian ad-Dzahabi describes Karimah as a noble woman, expert in knowledge, and possessed of quality hadith verses. Karimah is a figure who is productive in her work. The written works he produced throughout his life reached 100 books.
Karimah is a person who really loves knowledge. History states that he chose to be single until the end of his life because he was busy studying and loving knowledge. This is proven by the level of knowledge she has and places her as a female hadith expert.
This noble woman died in Mecca 463 AH at the age of 100 years. It is also said that Karimah never differentiated between genders and accepted anyone who wanted to learn from her. Some of the great scholars who studied included Hafizd Abu Bakr al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, author of the famous historical book Tarikh Baghdad .
Abu Dzar, a hadith expert from Harrah, advised his students to only take Bukhari's history from Karimah. From this story, it can be concluded that a woman should emulate Karimah's superior character. Women can be beacons of civilization.
