UMJ Center for Border and Coastal Studies Holds Sharia Economic Literacy Seminar for Border Coastal Communities

The Center for Border and Coastal Studies,  (PSPP UMJ) held a seminar on sharia economic literacy and village community empowerment policies in border areas. This seminar was held simultaneously to disseminate the results of border coastal research and launch the border and marine studies consortium which was held in a hybrid manner on Wednesday (27/09/2023) at the FIP UMJ Auditorium.

With the theme of Photographing Sharia Economics from Border Coasts, this seminar aims to bring together academics, practitioners and observers who are concerned with the problems of border and coastal communities, where almost more than 50% of them still lack welfare levels, to discuss policy studies from multidisciplinary in the socio-cultural perspective of local communities.

Chancellor of Muhammadiyah University Jakarta, Prof. Dr. Ma'mun Murod, M.Si., welcomed this seminar. Ma'mun also said that this was a step forward, especially as the focus of this portrait was the coastal and border areas.

"The development of socio-cultural research methods is currently very rapid, supported by information technology which is now capable of photographing economic life even in remote areas. This discussion tries to discuss how the sharia economy is able to interact with the local community economy. "I hope that this discussion will become a methodological discussion in looking at the reality in the field and adding to the body of knowledge and information," said Ma'mun.

On the same occasion, the General Secretary of  , Prof. Dr. Abdul Mu'ti, M.Ed., stated that this research program was very important and strategic. "Not only in the context of how UMJ has a role in developing research and scientific studies for coastal and marine communities, but also how research programs can provide input, even become part of the community empowerment model, especially in border and marine areas," said Mu'ti.

Mu'ti further said that the discussion of sharia economics should not be interpreted as Islamization, but as part of a joint effort involving the welfare of society.

Followed by the Head of the Sharia Economics and Finance Department  , represented by Mischa Nugraha Ramadhan, as the first speaker, explaining about sharia economic literacy in border and coastal communities. Bank Indonesia in collaboration with PSPP UMJ has a community empowerment program through Berdikari Village implementing empowerment models based on village potential.

The community empowerment model in coastal border villages recommended by the PSPP is in line with the government's policy regarding the sharia economic brand , where coastal communities in the villages of West Kalimantan and North Kalimantan are predominantly Muslim and have begun to have awareness of implementing Zakat from the results of their business as farmers and fishermen. .

On the same occasion, the Dean of FISIP,  , Prof. Dr. Semiarto Aji as the second resource person, discussed policy from an anthropological perspective and ethnographic research carried out on borders and coasts, culture and coastal communities. “A community will be stronger if its social structure is strong. "So, what we intervene first is not the livelihood or economy, but the social structure," said Semiarto.

"We hope that this will be an ongoing discussion, because to see or photograph the lives of people on the border and coast requires a multidisciplinary concept for empowerment," added the Chair of PSPP UMJ, Dr. Endang Rudiatin, M.Si, expressed his hopes.

The seminar ended with the official launch of the Consortium for Border and Marine Studies, represented by the Chancellor of  , Dr. Doddy Irawan, ST, M.Eng, and continued with the dissemination of the results of border coastal research carried out by PSPP UMJ researchers, Gema Fitriyanto ST., MT., Anne Mumtaza Putri, S.PI., and Dr. M. Nurul Yamin, Drs., M.Sc. The seminar was also attended by researchers, observers, practitioners and students within the UMJ environment. (NV/MT)
