Making Women Progressive, LPPA PWA DKI Jakarta Discusses Civilized Elections

 The Aisyiyah Research and Development Institute (LPPA) Regional Leadership of the Muhammadiyah (PWM) Special Capital Region (DKI) Jakarta held a Public Discussion with the title Civilized Elections Towards a Better Democracy in the Alia Cikini Hotel Hall on a hybrid basis, Monday and Wednesday (25-27/ 9/23).

Holding this Public Discussion is a form of  's commitment as stated in the treatise on progressive women. The minutes were the result of the 48th Congress, which required 'Aisyiyah to play an active role in helping to resolve national issues, in this case regarding electoral issues in the lead up to the 2024 elections. This was conveyed by the Chairperson of the 'Aisyiyah DKI Jakarta Regional Leadership, Drs. Hj. Elo Albugis, M.Ag., when giving a speech and opening the event. 

The same thing was conveyed by  as the largest women's organization 'Aisyiyah is committed to playing an active role and encouraging women's involvement in all aspects of life, especially politics. 

“Women's involvement in the political process is very important. "'Aisyiyah is committed to continuing to encourage women's involvement, in accordance with the tagline 'Aisyiyah is a progressive woman, namely being involved in economic, political, social and cultural aspects," said Mutmainah.

Muhamamdiyah University Jakarta (UMJ) is involved in public discussion events with leaders, lecturers and alumni being organizers and speakers at these activities. Among others, Deputy Chair of the DKI Jakarta Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership (PWM), Prof. Dr. Agus Suradika, MPd, Chancellor of UMJ, Prof. Dr. Ma'mun Murod, S.Sos., M.Sc., Deputy Chancellor II, Dr. Ir. Mutmainah, MM., Deputy Head of the DKI Jakarta LPPA PWA Study Division, Dr. Endang Sulastri, M.si., Member of the DKI Jakarta KPU, Dody Wijaya S.sos., and Chair of the MIPOL FISIP UMJ Study Program Dr. Lusi Andriyani, M.Sc.

Views about Muhammadiyah's role in politics emerged at the beginning of public discussions. According to the Deputy PWM DKI Jakarta who is also known as the UMJ Professor, Prof. Agus Suradika, Muhammadiyah's involvement in politics is a necessity. Muhammadiyah needs to take part and must not be apathetic towards politics.

Furthermore, Agus highlighted how Muhammadiyah cadres need to be involved in the diaspora in politics. This is a form of support to realize Muhammadiyah's ideals in building a truly Islamic society. 
"Let the cadres spread to various political parties, with the hope of bringing the values ​​of the struggle of amar ma'ruf nahi munkar according to Muhammadiyah teachings," concluded Agus.

On the same occasion, the Chancellor of UMJ, Prof. Dr. Ma'mun Murod, S.Sos., M.Sc., in his presentation said that before the general election, many strategic political issues emerged before the election. He mapped out everything from the independence of election organizers, neutrality of survey institutions, expensive political costs, political polarization, puritanical politics, hoaxes, to identity politics.

With a wide network, Muhammadiyah can certainly play an active role in politics. Ma'mun also said that Muhammadiyah's attitude in facing political contestation is active independence. “The organization is independent, but Muhammadiyah members are active. So, you all have to be active, don't be silent. Indeed, currently our politics looks masculine even though there is thirty percent involvement of women, but the face is still masculine. "The hope is that with Ibu ('Aisyiyah's) involvement in politics, we will be able to refine our politics," explained Mamun.

No less interesting, the public discussion also looked at the involvement of women. This was conveyed by the Head of the DKI Jakarta LPP PWA research division, Prof. Dr. Suswandari, M.Pd who discussed the importance of women's representation in political institutions. She explains the challenges women face in political equality, starting from structural, institutional and cultural barriers.

Not only that, to measure election readiness, the discussion also involved the organizers, namely alumni from Political Science FISIP UMJ and also DKI Jakarta KPU Member 2023-2028, Doddy Wijaya, S.sos discussing the technicalities of holding elections from stages, campaigns, legal basis , to election problems and challenges. Also inviting election observer institutions, which was attended directly by the Director ofeludem, Khaerunissa Agustiani, she discussed the campaign strategies of female legislative candidates in attracting voter sympathy.

The discussion activity was attended by the Autonomous Organization (Ortom) for the DKI Jakarta Region. Public Discussion will continue next Wednesday.
